Significance Statement
Here in Chongqing University, China, Prof. Zidong Wei’s group reported a general strategy to enhance the alkaline stability of anion exchange membranes. Anion exchange membranes are commonly used in alkaline fuel cells where the working condition are strong basic. However, anion exchange membranes, which contain organic N-containing ion exchange sites that will be attacked by OH- ions, will decompose easily.
In this report, Prof. Wei’s team designed a polymer structure that can capture OH- reversely by carbonyl groups, which provide structural protection to N-containing groups. The called “Rat trap effect” makes the anion exchange membrane can retain 95% of their initial conductivities after immersed in 1 M NaOH solution for 10 days.
