Abstract
η2-coordination of a SnSn bond: An intramolecular distannene was synthesized in a straightforward fashion from 4,5-dilithio-9,9-dimethylxanthene. This compound reacts with [Ni(cod)2] to form a Ni0 complex with an unprecedented Sn2Ni triangle (see scheme; cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene).

Additional Information
The intramolecular distannene 1 was synthesized from 4,5-dilithio-9,9-dimethylxanthene and the aryltinchloride [ArSnCl] carrying the bulky terphenylligand [Ar = C6H3-2,6-Mes2, Mes = C6H2-2,4,6-Me3]. The Reaction of distannene 1 with Ni(COD)2 forms the Ni(0)-complex 2 exhibiting an unprecedented Sn2Ni triangle. The compounds 1 and 2 were fully characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis and 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy. Surprisingly few structural changes of the distannene moiety occur on coordination of the nickel atom. The bonding situation in the Sn2Ni triangle can be described as cyclic triple donor-acceptor bond.
