Abstract

In this paper, a novel symmetric multi slot patch antenna is proposed with enhanced bandwidth and isolation, which can be used for Multiple Input Multiple output (MIMO) systems. The developed two element MIMO system resonates at the tri band of frequencies 3.8 GHz, 6.6 GHz and 7.6 GHz with an improved impedance bandwidth of 20% and an average isolation of 40 dB. The proposed antenna exhibits improved performance compared to the present widely used E shaped patch antennas and is a good choice for MIMO systems operating for UWB applications.

The improved isolation of the antenna is obtained without using any additional decoupling elements and is achieved with the symmetric design of the antenna. This antenna is more suitable for applications like mobile phones, laptops, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and WLAN cards. The isolation of the antenna system can be further improved by employing EBG (Electronic Band Gap) structures and ground plane reduction methods. Also, different tri-band resonant frequencies can be obtained by changing the size of the antenna structure.
