Introducing a New Generation of Operating Mechanism for High Voltage AC Circuit Breakers

Abstract

This paper describes a new generation of circuit-breaker operating mechanism (Motor Drive) that has been designed and developed to meet even the most severe requirements of circuit-breaker operating duties. In the new design the number of moving parts has been reduced to one – a three-phase motor with permanent magnet rotor. It is fully electronically controlled and has features such as continuous self-monitoring and monitoring of timing. An electrical energy buffer replaces conventional energy storage methods. The new drive offers increased reliability and availability, reduced maintenance requirements, and covers a wider range of applications than is possible with conventional operating mechanisms.
